White Cliffs Countryside Project

Second Annual Western Heights Open Day - 8th July 2001 11am - 4pm

The aim of the day is to encourage local people and visitors in Dover District to visit and appreciate the military, cultural and natural history and value of the Western Heights fortifications and Local Nature Reserve. An event that will reinforce the links between the ecological and historical importance of the site and encourage the use of the heights by a wide range of user groups. This event will build on the success of last years open day (which attracted 150 visitors despite the appalling weather.

Parking:     St. Martins Battery Car Park and HMYOI Sports Field (tbc*)

 Displays:     Centred around the Grand Shaft Barracks site. The following displays are expected or have been invited:

 White Cliffs Countryside Project - Wildlife of the Western Heights

Western Heights Preservation Society - History and group display and membership drive

Western Heights Today - History and website

Cinque Ports Volunteer Artillery - Living encampment and drill display

Sladden Farm - 'Meet the Dexters' and burger van

Rob and Pat Moon - Green woodworking

English Nature - Local Nature Reserves display

And more…

In addition the Grand Shaft will be open to visitors at the reduced price of 60p adults and 40p children for the duration of the day.


 Guided Walks:

Western Heights History -11.30 am and 2.3Opm - Duration 2 hours meeting at St. Martins Battery Car Park and including a drill display by CPVA

 Green Gang - Minibeast Safari - 2.OOpm - Duration 1 hou,r meeting at St. Martins Battery Car Park
