Archcliffe Fort
The subject of Archcliffe Fort is relevant to the story of Western Heights, sitting as it does at the foot of the hill above Shakespeare beach and the old railway marshalling yard. However its story is far too complex to deal with here and anybody wishing to know more about this ancient fortification would do well to obtain a copy of the only book that deals with the Fort in any detail; 'The History of Archcliffe Fort' by Douglas Welby. This can be obtained at Dover Museum and will only cost a few pounds.
The ISBN no. is 0-906124-11-5.
Having said that, here's a nice representation of the Fort by the Illustrated London News, dated 1870. For anyone who knows Dover this aspect is rather lacking in accuracy although this is made up for in pure imagination !
