Prison Officer Plunges 20ft

AN OFFICER at Dover Young Offender Institut­ion suffered serious back injuries when he slipped through a hole in a stairwell and plung­ed 2Oft.

Dover firefighters us­ing a specialist line harness worked with para­medics to retrieve the injured man.  He was in considerable pain after the accident  which happened at 8.45am on Tuesday.

He was attended by prison medical staff and given oxygen during the rescue attempt. The accident occurred while the officer, who is believed to be in his mid fifties, was carrying out an inspection of shafts at the institution.

Prison governor Col­ette Kershaw said: "We believe he has a fractu­red pelvis and was to be transferred from the William Harvey to an­other hospital.

An internal investiga­tion is being carried out into how the accident happened."
