How to Visit Western Heights

There are two main motorways that run almost all the way to Dover, the M2 and the M20. My own preference is the M2/A2 route when coming from London, East Anglia and Essex. It is a straight forward route with lots of country views and the cathedral city of Canterbury is en-route if you fancy some sightseeing. If coming from east Essex or East Anglia you will need £1.00 to get your car through the Dartford River Crossing; A bridge south-bound, and two tunnels north-bound.

The M20 is possibly more direct if you’re driving ‘down’, or anti-clockwise around the left hand side of the M25, past the M40, M4, M23 turnings etc. You can then turn off onto the M26 and this will lead you straight onto the M20. The M20 changes into the A20 and goes straight into Dover and terminates at the ferry port.

Once you’re there

When you’ve parked up there are a number of ways to walk the Heights.

Whichever way you go though, the following equipment should be considered:

Good walking boots

Clothes you don’t mind getting pulled on brambles & brickwork

Backpack with flask of tea

Map of Heights (can be printed off from here)

Torch

Camera, Spare film, Flashgun

Mobile ‘phone

Please refer here to see map of recommended walks.

Please study the map to make yourself familiar with which parts of the defences you wish to see. Make sure you bring enough film. Because of the nature of the structures and the walks a wide-angle lens is a good idea if you have one.

Finally, some important points to remember:

TRY NOT TO SCARE THE CATTLE

TAKE YOUR LITTER HOME

DON’T PICK THE WILD FLOWERS

IF YOU SEE ANYONE DAMAGING FENCES, SCARING CATTLE OR LIGHTING FIRES ETC. PLEASE TELEPHONE DOVER POLICE ON 240055

WHEN YOU GET HOME TELL YOUR FRIENDS HOW BRILLIANT IT WAS !

REMEMBER, DERELICT BUILDINGS CAN BE DANGEROUS

Oh, one other thing....

While you’re in Dover why not visit Dover Castle. There’s plenty to see;

Henry II’s keep, circa 1190

Inner & outer curtain walls

Underground works

Napoleonic & WW2 tunnel system;

WW2 Field hospital & Operations centre

Ack-Ack guns & cannon

 New Henry VIII exhibition

 New Siege of 1216 exhibition

Stand on the Admiralty Lookout over the cliffs

See the Roman lighthouse, or ‘Pharos’

Visit both restaurants

Buy a momento of your visit in either of the Two giftshops.

Dover Castle is a lovely day out and enjoys superb views over the channel. On a clear day you can see France. For more information ‘phone 01304-211067 or visit the English Heritage website.
