Hospital Sally Port

You are now standing opposite the entrance to the tunnel and on top of the drawbridge rest.  The arches you see are at the top of the footpath leading up the hill from the hospital.  The area is in a bad state and at some point some poor soul has been living 'underneath the arches'.  To your right is the rest of the ditch leading up to the site of Archcliffe Gate at the top of South Military Hill.  To your left the ditch continues a few yards then ends as a sheer drop down to Hammond's petrol station in Limekiln Street below.  To turn round and look at the entrance to the tunnel click on the picture.
